About the course

The core of the study program is the issues and problems connected with the design and construction of yachts.

The study course has been prepared as a practical profile studies, which is why it includes numerous practices and apprenticeships. Many classes are conducted by practicians employed in industry.

The course was initiated in cooperation with  Polboat – Polska Izba Przemysłu Jachtowego i Sportów Wodnych  and many renowned yacht building yards located in Gdańsk (Aluship, Complex Jacht, SunReef) or in its vicinity (Technomarine, Ostróda Yacht). Another company that cooperated within the project is the certification provider Polski Rejestr Statków.

The study course includes a sailing adaptation camp with the elements of the sailing course for willing students after the second term (Iława, Jeziorak lake) and a sea cruise onboard of a sailing ship after the fourth term.

Every years students will visit production plants and they will have vocational practices. We will gladly help in getting a summer job in yachting industry.

Annual community service during the renovation of an old-timer sailing ship will allow a willing group of students to participate in an additional sea cruise.

Infrastructure

The Institute of Ocean Technology and Ship Technology at Gdańsk University of Technology is an exceptional unit. It was founded after World War II and has been educating ship specialists since that time.

The Institute has an attractive laboratory infrastructure, including, among others:

  • Model testing tank
  • Research station at Jeziorak lake in Iława
  • Laboratory of Off-Shore Structures
  • Laboratory of Ship Machines and Systems

Boat building workshop will be created for the needs of the study course.

Education and gaining practical abilities

Apart from the compulsory practices, working in Science Clubs or participating in non-compulsory boat building activities will allow our students to gain the experience necessary for designers, constructors and builders.

Students working in Science Clubs can gain the skills necessary in design and construction of muscle-power propelled vessels and submarines, solar-powered vessels or remote-controlled yachts models.

Possibilities of future employment

Yacht building industry belongs to the fastest developing sectors of economy in recent years.

We believe that early contacts of students with the industry will allow our graduates to quickly find their career path and find an attractive job.

It is worth to note the fact that some of the renowned Polish yacht shipyards have their own desing and construction bureaus and build vessels according o their own designs. This is one of the few branches of industry where designers, technologists or production engineers work on an attractive final product aimed at global markets.

Many graduates of Gdańsk Tech were successful in this field, taking key positions in globally-recognized companies, or becoming the owners of design bureaus of production plants.

Benefits for students/graduates

  • possibility of gaining exceptional, practical professional competences,
  • numerous practices and apprenticeships, even throughout the term,
  • contact with possible employees throughout the studies.
