Naval Architecture and Offshore Structures

About the course

Our wide educational offer includes both the construction of ships and floating vessels and exploration of sea and ocean resources. The offer was designed with current market requirements in mind, containing issues connected with the construction of small ships, yachts, littoral and inland vessels, servicing drilling platforms, as well as the problems connected with ship repairs and overhauls. We teach our students to build ships, starting with small yachts and fishing boats to supertankers and cruise ships.

Possibilities of employment in future

Our graduates receive education that allows them to undertake work in marine economy enterprises, small production and repair shipyards, in enterprises cooperating with ship-building industry, in design and construction bureaus, in ship-owner enterprises, technical supervisioon institutions and marine administration bodies, in ship-building R&D units, institution dealing with exploitation of seas and oceans, introducing new forms of organization and supervision, marketing and other sectors of economy, including machine industry or operation of ports and fleet.

Outline of the program study

The studies last 7 terms. First 3 terms are dedicated to gaining knowledge on basic, general and technical subjects. Six weeks of professional practice are anticipated within the study course.

For courses starting before 2018/2019 academic year:

Ocean technology studies offer four specialties: two connected with ship-building and two separate ones (Management and Marketing in Marine Economy and Engineering of Natural Resources). After third term, the students from ship-building specialties select one of the two majors: Construction of Ships and Yachts or Machines, Power Plants and Equipment of Ships and Off-Shore Vessels). The subsequent three terms are dedicated to gaining specialized, theoretical and practical knowledge on the selected major. Seventh term is dedicated to the diploma thesis. The recruitment for Management and Marketing in Marine Economy specialty is conducted separately. First three terms are conducted jointly with the ship-building specialties, starting from the fourth term, the specialty is conducted separately.

For courses starting from 2018/2019

Ocean technology offers three specialties, two connected with ship-building and a separate one (Engineering of Natural Resources). After third term, the students from ship-building specialties select one of two majors: Construction of Ships and Yachts (which in turn is divided into two profiles from the 6th term: Large Ships and Small Ships and Yachts), or Power Plants and Off-Shore Technical Devices. The subsequent three terms are dedicated to gaining specialized, theoretical and practical knowledge on the selected major. Seventh term is dedicated to the diploma thesis.

Majors:

1. Construction of Ships and Yachts:

This major includes the following diploma courses: hydromechanics and design, technology and materials science, strength and construction of a ship. This is the so called "hull specialty" connected with the hull of a floating vessel. The course includes classes on design, construction and technology of hulls of various types of vessels (large, small, incl. yachts).

2. Machines, Power Plants and Equipment of Ships and Off-Shore Vessels (from the study course starting in 2018/2019 academic year: Power Plants and Off-Shore Devices):

This major includes the following courses: ship power plants, gas and steam turbines, ship equipment. This is the so called "machine specialty" connected with propulsion of floating vessels and powering off-shore vessels such as drilling platforms. The course includes classes on design and operation of the ship power plants and off-shore vessels equipped with various engines and motors, design of ship equipment performing specific functions, as well as issues connected with assembly, repair, operation, diagnostics and reliability technologies with the safety of operations.

3. Management and Marketing in Marine Economy (cancelled from 2018/2019 academic year):

A specialty with separate recruitment (limited number of admissions). It includes problems connected with management and marketing in large and small enterprises connedted directly or indirectly with marine economy, marine transport and operatoion of ports and fleet.

4. Engineering of Natural Resources (starting from 2018/2019 academic year: Engineering of Off-Shore Natural Resources):

This major includes a wide array of problems connected with the exploration and extraction of natural resources on- and off-shore. The study program includes problems connected with geodesy, oceanology, oil and gas (incl. shale gas) extraction techniques, etc.

Qualifications of the graduates (study program initiated before 2018/2019 academic year):

A graduate has a basic knowledge within mathematics and physics science, technical science  - construction and operation of ships, floating vessels and off-shore structures - as well as economy, production organization and marketing. They are ready to: perform basic work associated with the design of construction, ship and off-shore vessels building and repair technology, operating the powerplants and equipment of ships. They are ready to undertake jobs in shipyards, plants cooperating with ship-building industry, design and construction bureaus, technical services of ship owner companies, powerplants of ships and off-shore vessels, ship-building industry R&D departments, enterprises exploring seas and oceans, technical supervision agencies, marine administration units, in ports and terminals. A graduate has commanded a foreign language on B2 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and has commanded specialized vocabulary allowing communication on professional level. A graduate is ready to start a 2nd degree course.

They are ready to: perform basic work associated with the design of construction, ship and off-shore vessels building and repair technology, operating the powerplants and equipment of ships. They are ready to undertake jobs in shipyards, plants cooperating with ship-building industry, design and construction bureaus, technical services of ship owner companies, powerplants of ships and off-shore vessels, ship-building industry R&D departments, enterprises exploring seas and oceans associated with the extraction and processing of oil and natural gas, in agencies supervising the environmental impact of oil industry, technical supervision agencies, marine administration units, in ports and terminals. A graduate has commanded a foreign language on B2 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and has commanded specialized vocabulary allowing communication on professional level. A graduate is ready to start a 2nd degree course.

The study course anticipates industrial and specialized practice. Graduating from any specialty/major enables the students to continue education on 2nd degree courses.
