The Laboratory of Mechanics of Materials and Structures was created as a result of the merger of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Faculty of Ocean Engineering and Ship Technology of GUT from the combination of former laboratories: Laboratory of Strength of Materials and Laboratory of Ocean Marine Structures.

The laboratory can be divided into two parts. The first deals with the study of large-scale structures and structural materials. This part of the Laboratory is located in building number 30. The "Large Force Field" stand, together with the ZD 400 PU and Instron 8503 testing machines, provides a research infrastructure that is unique in the country for testing large-scale objects or entire structural nodes on a real scale. Biaxial static and fatigue testing (tension and torsion) can be carried out on one of two modern machines - MTS 809.10 and MTS Bionix 25. Thanks to HBM's Quantum series modular portable measurement system, the Laboratory can conduct deformation and stress testing of real structures in industrial conditions.

The second part of the Laboratory is located in building number 40 and is dedicated exclusively to the study of biomaterials under uniaxial and multiaxial, static and dynamic loading conditions.
