On April 20, 2021, from 9:00 to 12:00 Gdańsk will host the first European GreenMarE conference dedicated to "green" technologies, reducing the emission of pollution from the ships in compliance with the objectives of the new world climate policy.

The GreenMarE conference is one of the events accompanying the Marine Economy InterMarE South Baltic trade fair. Due to COVID-19 pandemics, the conference, alongside with the trade fair will be held online.

The conference is organized by Związek Pracodawców FORUM OKRĘTOWE (Employer Union SHIPPING FORUM), Międzynarodowe Targi Gdańskie S.A. (International Trade Fair Gdańsk Ltd) and  PORTALMORSKI.PL Sp. z o.o., and it is under the honorary patronage of:

  • Embassy of Norway to Poland,
  • SEA Europe – The Shipyards' & Maritime Equipment Association of Europe,
  • DNV,
  • President of the City of Gdańsk.

In compliance with the objectives outlined by the International Marine Organization, to 2050 the amount of the greenhouse gasses emitted by world sailing has to be reduced by half from the level of over 800 million tons. Even more ambitious objectives were assumed in the policy of the European Green Order, adopted by the European Committee. Reaching these objectives will be associated with the necessity of development and commercialization of numerous innovative technical solutions in marine transport, many of which are not yet available in the market.

This great challenge, being at the same time a great chance for Polish and European marine industry for wider participation in the global race of innovations in this area. The idea of GreenMarE conference was born from the need for discussion about these subjects. It was conceived as a forum for exchanging opinions and experience of the representatives of marine industry, including shipyards, design bureaus, propulsion system producers, national and European administration, classification and finance institutions.

The invitation to participate in the first edition of GreenMarE conference was accepted by: Anders Eide, the ambassador of Norway to Poland, Christophe Tytgat – secretary general SEA Europe and Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen – chairman of the board of DNV Maritime, who in their welcoming speeches will address the subject of the energy-production turnaround which is to happen in the world marine sailing and challenges associated with it.

The panel members will include, among others: Erik Nyhus, Director for Environmental Matters, DNV, Christophe Tytgat, Hege Økland – presidents of NCE Maritime CleanTech, Dariusz Jaguszewski, ship designer and member of the board of Remontowa Shipbuilding shipyard. They will speak about the decarbonisation of sailing, development of innovative technologies and solutions in the construction of low- and zero-emission vessels, pro-ecological overhauls of ships, application of alternative fuels and renewable energy sources, including factors associated with the modification of standards, norms, legal regulations and practices in marine transport.

Are European – and Polish – shipyards, design bureaus, equipment producers, ship owners, and classification societies ready to face the challenges associated with the coming of "green" sailing? What experience, offer and solutions in this area do they have? Which competences would they like to develop? Why is it worth to cooperate in this area with Norway, the leader in introducing and promoting clean sailing?

These are just a few questions the participants of GreenMarE 2021 will try to answer.

The conference in English will have a form of online live coverage and will be open for general public. The attendance is free of charge.
