On Tuesday, May 18 the authorities of Gdańsk University of Technology signed a cooperation agreement with Danish Technical University, Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IMP PAN) and PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna. Thanks to this agreement, students and researchers of the GUT will gain yet another possibility of exchanging the knowledge, conducting joint research and professional development in the area of the off-shore wind energy.

Gdańsk Tech being a leading science and research institution in the area of ocean technlogy in Poland, faces the market trends and decides to increase the knowledge and competence of its students and scientific staff to even larger extent.

Apart from the cooperation agreement signed with Danish Technical University, Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery of the Polish Academy of Sciences and PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna, in the nearest future Gdańsk University of Technology intends to launch an inter-university study course associated with off-shore wind energy in cooperation with its research and didactic partner - Marine University in Gdynia.

Our university successfully runs a post-graduate course "Off-Shore Wind Enegry" at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology. Third edition of the studies is currently underway. The graduates of the studies join the ranks of employees in the dynamically developing area of the off-shore wind energy.

Moreover, Gdańsk Tech will soon initiate the launching of R&D unit Gdańsk Tech Center for Off-Shore Wind Energy which will closely cooperate with the marine industry through widely understood research for external enterprises.

The agreement signed on 18 May is another step for the development of the university in the off-shore area. Due to its location at the shore of the Baltic Sea and leading ports in Gdańsk and Gdynia, the university has long-lasting traditions in educating many generations of engineers and specialists, and also in research and development of novel marine technologies. The participation of the Danish university derives from the fact that Denmark is a leading country in Europe as far as wind energy and research in this area is concerned.

The cooperation agreement was signed in the auditorium of Gdańsk Tech by professor Krzysztof Wilde, Gdańsk Tech Rector; Peter Hauge Madsen, Head of the Department of Wind Energy of Danish Technical University; professor Jan Kiciński, Head of IMP PAN; and Wojciech Dąbrowski, Chairman of the Board of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna. The importance of this agreement was emphasized by the presence of the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark to Poland, Ole Toft and Julian Skelink, Consul of the Kingdom of Denmark in Gdańsk. The agreement was initiated by professor Wojciech Litwin, Head of the Institute of Ocean Technology and Ship-building and professor Paweł Flaszyński of IMP PAN.

– Signing this agreement is an important step forward for all the parties and it is a possibility to start even closer and more effective cooperation - said Gdańsk Tech Rector prof. Krzysztof Wilde - By making this next step towards the sea we meet the trends and expectations of the market. We are going to rise to the challenge and put our best effort in the work for the dynamically developing off-shore industry.

– Cooperation with teh leading Polish and foreign research institutions is a great chance for the dynamic development of renewable energy sources in Poland - said Wojciech Dąbrowski, Chairman of the Board of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna - Exchanging the konwledge between us and our partners will also contribute to building the competences of the future among students who will find employment in the future off-shore projects prepared for the Polish part of the Baltic Sea.

Within the agreement, the parties agreed to:

  • hold regular, mutual visits of professors, researchers and scientific staff members at both universities in research and didactic purposes,
  • increase the mobility of students, PhD students, technical and administrative staff of both universities,
  • transfer the knowledge through training programs between the parties,
  • cooperate in activities of particular R&D and scientific meaning through the exchange of experience in operating complex research and technical apparatus,
  • organize promotion initiatives such as seminars, conferences, workshops, lessons, practical classes and apprenticeship for students, trainings and study meetings,
  • develop initiatives aimed at improving the management,
  • develop joint projects which will be applied for financing by the European Committee or other national or international organizations,
  • conduct activities aimed at distribution and transfer of the knowledge gained within the agreement.
