SimLE Students representing GUT in Dubai. International Astronautical Congress has begun

SimLE Students representing GUT in Dubai. International Astronautical Congress has begun
NASA, ESA, Boeing, Airbus, Polish Space Agency and... GUT students. 2021 International Astronautical Congress was initiated in Dubai, our university is represented by the students associated in the SimLE science club.

International Astronautical Congress is the largest event of this type in the world. Organizations from the whole space sector have an opportunity to meet during the event.

– During our trip we represent Gdansk University of Technology, our science club and, particularly, baloon and rocket projects. We are also looking for inspiration and establish contacts with the whole space sector said Marcin Jasiukowicz, member of SimLE science club.

Two projects

The baloon project mentioned by the student is of course project Stardust - a mission of a stratospheric baloon. Students launch their baloon to examine mysterious, previously unlisted bacteria which can be used in future in the production of medications. Such an experiment took place recently in Kiruna, Sweden. The baloon was sent to the altitude of 27,3 km and collected samples throughout 4 hours. Now, the bacteria is being examined in a laboratory.

In turn, the rocket project is called SimBa. Students have been involved in it for several years and they have been constructing their own rockets. Obviously, they are smaller than the ones built by experienced engineers from the other side of the ocean, but it does not stop our students from participating in European Rocketry Challenge which took place several days ago in Portugal (R5 unit had its maiden flight during the event). In compliance with the assumptions of the challenge, the rocket was supposed to lift off and reach the altitude of 3 kilometers. Students spent long hours working in Protolab I and Protolab II. With the modern equipment gathered in these facilities, they were able to design and, most of all, build their rocket.

IAC 2021

Once a year, during International Astronautical Congress, global space community meets on an iconic event where greatest mind work together for the progress and improvement of mankind. They exchange information, ideas, share their achievements, observations and strategies. Each year during the congress thematic plenary sessions, lectures, technical sessions and interactive workshops are held providing numerous occasions for learning.
