Scientist Profile

Prof. Jakub Montewka has been with the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Shipbuilding at the Gdansk University of Technology (PG) since 2021, where he serves as the Head of the Department of Hydromechanics and Ship Design. He began his scientific career by earning a Ph.D. in Geodesy and Cartography in 2008 from the Maritime Academy in Szczecin. He received his habilitation in Transport in 2015 and was awarded the title of Professor of Engineering Sciences in 2024.

Professor Montewka specializes in the development of methods and models for risk assessment in maritime transport systems. His work significantly contributes to the advancement of risk-based design and operational concepts, which are crucial for maritime safety. He gained practical experience working on board seagoing vessels as an officer at both operational and management levels.

Scientific Achievements

Prof. Jakub Montewka is the author or co-author of more than 150 scientific publications. He has led and participated in several international research projects. His international collaborations include visiting professor roles at Aalto University in Finland, TallTech in Estonia, and Wuhan University of Technology in China.

He has also supervised two Ph.D. students in Poland and two abroad, and he has frequently reviewed doctoral theses from prestigious universities such as those in Delft, Trondheim, Lisbon, and Naples. His contributions to science have been recognized with numerous awards from the rectors of the Gdansk University of Technology and the Maritime University in Gdynia.

Regarding his professorial nomination, Prof. Montewka stated:

"The professorial nomination I received is a great honor for me, which I accepted with joy. Above all, it is a confirmation that scientific work is primarily about working with people, opening up to others, and supporting them in becoming better. This nomination is the merit of many people I have met along the way, but undoubtedly, the help and support I receive daily from my Wife, as well as her openness to the new and unknown, are invaluable."

Outside of his academic work, Professor Montewka values active and creative leisure time, preferring to spend it with his family and friends.

The nomination of Professor of Engineering and Technical Sciences is not only a culmination of Dr. Jakub Montewka's achievements to date but also a motivation for further scientific and educational work, benefiting both the academic community and the maritime industry.
