The Advancement of Gdańsk University of Technology in the Shanghai Ranking
Gdańsk University of Technology achieved great success by advancing 100 places in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking – considered the most prestigious ranking of higher education institutions in the world.

The ranking has been compiled since 2003. The exact position in the ranking is known only for the top 100 universities in the world, while the remaining institutions are listed only in groups of 100. For the fifth consecutive year, Gdańsk University of Technology has been included in the ranking, advancing compared to last year and placing in the 801-900 range among the world's best universities.

“This is a tremendous success and proof that the consistent efforts of the entire academic community of Gdańsk University of Technology are yielding tangible results,” says Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, Rector of GUT. “The advancement of our university in this prestigious ranking is a result not only of scientific and educational excellence but also of strategic investments in faculty development, research infrastructure, and international collaboration.”

As usual, the podium of the ranking was dominated by U.S. universities – Harvard University, Stanford University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In the ARWU 2024, eight Polish universities were classified. Among Polish higher education institutions, Gdańsk University of Technology is the third highest-ranked (in the 801-900 range). Higher positions were secured by Jagiellonian University and the University of Warsaw, both in the 401-500 range. Meanwhile, in the 901-1000 range were Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Warsaw University of Technology, and Wrocław Medical University.

“Our goal for the coming years is to further strengthen the university's position on the international stage, intensify scientific research and innovation that address contemporary global challenges, and further engage in educating a modern engineering workforce ready to meet the expectations of the global job market,” adds Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, Rector of GUT.

How is the Shanghai Ranking Compiled?

The ranking classifies universities from around the world based on several indicators:

  • The number of alumni or staff who have received a Nobel Prize or a Fields Medal,
  • The number of researchers listed in the Highly Cited Researchers published by Clarivate,
  • The number of articles in the scientific journals "Nature" and "Science,"
  • The number of articles indexed in the Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Science Citation Index,
  • The academic performance of a university relative to the number of academic staff.

Gdańsk University of Technology improved its performance in four of the indicators listed above, thanks to significant scientific achievements, compared to the previous edition. Detailed results can be found on the ranking's website.
