Final of "The RINA-KORAB Student Naval Architect Award 2024" competition
The competition, organised by the KORAB Polish Shipbuilders' Society, is held under the auspices of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) and has a long tradition dating back to 1997. RINA is an internationally recognised organisation of shipbuilding professionals.
Presentation of the final works
During the final, three master's theses were presented, which were selected from among all the entries by a jury composed of representatives from industry and academia: Andrzej Buczkowski, Krzysztof Gockowski and Przemysław Krata.
Here is the list of presented works:
"The impact of selected rigging design changes on the efficiency of wind propulsion on small commercial vessels". - Author: Olga Rozestwińska
"Evaluation of the usefulness of selected meshless numerical fluid mechanics tools in the ship design process" - Author: Dominik Leśniak
"Modelling, simulation and optimisation of Flettner rotor parameters for use in shipbuilding" - Author: Marcin Janczewski vel Anczewski
Each presentation was followed by a question-and-answer session, during which the authors had to demonstrate their in-depth knowledge of the topic and their ability to answer insightful questions from the floor.
Announcement of the winner
The jury judged the entries on the basis of their quality, merit and presentation skills of the authors. This year's winner was Dominik Lesniak for his paper entitled 'Evaluation of the usefulness of selected meshless numerical fluid mechanics tools in the ship design process'. The thesis was written under the supervision of Dr Cezary Źrodowski, Professor PG.
Awards
There was a prize of PLN 2,000 for the winner and the finalists received prizes of PLN 500 each. All prizes were financed from the membership fees of the KORAB Polish Shipbuilders' Association.
