From Harsh Environments to Reliable Operation: Tribology of Offshore Systems

This talk presents key tribological challenges specific to ocean and offshore tribology systems, including application-specific challenges and condition monitoring under extreme environments. Core measurement techniques, modelling approaches, and data gaps addressed within COST Action CA23155 are discussed. Emphasis is placed on component-scale to system-level tribology in bearings, seals, and sliding interfaces relevant to ocean energy, shipping, and infrastructure. The talk highlights emerging experimental capabilities and cross-sector case studies developed within the European Ocean Tribology Centre (OTC) network.

Dr Florian König is a Tenure Track Assistant Professor at Ghent University (Soete Laboratory) in the field of design, construction, and sustainability of high‑performance machines. His research focuses on the structural, dynamic, and lifetime behaviour of mechanical systems, combining experimentally validated analytical and numerical models. His work addresses efficiency, durability, reliability, and environmental impact of machines and drive systems over their full life cycle, with particular emphasis on integrated condition monitoring for digital twin development. His academic profile builds on extensive prior research and leadership experience at RWTH Aachen University.
