Behind the Papers: Evolution, Quality, and Challenges in Tribology Research

This talk offers a reflective overview of the evolution of scientific publishing in tribology, highlighting both progress and emerging challenges. Over recent decades, expectations regarding research quality, validation, and scientific rigor have increased significantly. At the same time, the rapidly growing number of submissions places considerable pressure on the peer-review process and editorial decision-making. The presentation addresses issues related to expertise, consistency of evaluation, and the risk of uneven quality. These aspects are illustrated through examples from hydrodynamic lubrication, particularly surface texturing research. The talk provides an insider perspective on the current state of tribology publishing and outlines critical challenges for its future development.

HDR Michel Fillon was formerly a CNRS Director of Research at the Pprime Institute, University of Poitiers. He received his Ph.D. in 1985 and his Habilitation in 1995 from the same university. His research, spanning over 40 years, focused on sliding bearings, thermal effects, TEHD regimes, transient operating conditions, and surface texturing. He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. He led the Tribology team (2002–2010) and later directed the Solid Mechanics Department. A Fellow of ASME and STLE, he has held several editorial roles, including Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Tribology (2003–2009) and Co-Editor-in-Chief of Tribology International (2014–2021). He currently serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Mechanics & Industry and is involved in multiple journal boards.
