The students will gain and expand their knowledge about off-shore wind energy - the fastest developing technology associated with obtaining energy from renewable sources. They will also learn about the functioning of the market, all the aspects regarding the design of wind farms in Polish Exclusive Economic Zone o the Baltic Sea. On 15th of October the fourth edition of the Off-Shore Wind Energy post-graduate course was officially launched.

The studies are organized by the Institute of Ocean Technology and Ship Building of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology. The ceremony took place in the GUT Main Building, where nearly 50 students enrolled for the course gathered on the premises of Heweliusz courtyard. This year the course obtained the patronage of PKN Orlen.

Specialist in a high demand

The market really needs specialists dealing with off-shore wind energy. In the nearest future, two wind farms are to be constructed on the Baltic. First turbine will be launched in 2026. The companies are really interested in employing workers and enginners capable of servicing the wind farms and the whole infrastructure connected with off-shore energy production - said professor Marek Dzida, PhD, DSc, ME, vice-rector for education, head of the post-graduate studies within this study course.

– In Poland, this "wild river" only starts to flow, however, without any doubts this course is future-oriented. The sector has been learning continuously - during the two terms of your studies, you will be able to gain knowledge from renowned experts in the field – said Jakub Budzyński, vice-president of the board of the Society of the Off-Shore Wind Energy.

The ceremony was also attended by Marcin Godek (PKN Orlen) and Wojciech Olszewski, MSc, ME, deputy-head of the course Off-Shore Wind Energy.

Development of the market

It should be added that in the nearest future the market of the off-shore wind energy will undergo a significant development in Poland. In the designed Energy Policy of Poland to 2040 it is anticipated to launch off-shore wind farms of combined power capacity exceeding 10 GW, which makes Poland a potential leader of the sector in Europe. The study course aims at preparing a professional staff to answer the needs of such a large market. The investment in this sector of energy production in Poland is further justified by a well-developed supply chain for the off-shore wind sector, providing services for wind farms located in foreign markets, including the construction of world-class vessels for erecting and servicing off-shore wind farms, specialized steel structures, electrical equipment and research – measurement services.
