Summing up the year 2022 at Gdańsk University of Technology
Awarded inventions, investments counted in hundreds of millions of zlotys, recognition in international rankings, cooperation with leading European technical universities, one of the best results of evaluation of research activity in the country, organization of important events - in 2022, Gdańsk University of Technology consistently achieved its goals. The community of our university also showed solidarity with the Ukrainian nation.

In the Domestic Forefront, Noticed Abroad

In 2022, Gdańsk University of Technology strengthened its presence in the most important international rankings. It was among 11 Polish universities in the so-called Shanghai ranking (Academic Ranking of World Universities), which is considered the most prestigious ranking of universities in the world. In this year's ranking, our university maintained its position in the 801-900 range and recorded a point increase in two ranking indicators: PUB and PCP.

In the QS World University Rankings of the best universities in the world, Gdańsk University of Technology ranked in the 801-1000 range for the fourth year in a row, improving its result by 5%. and ranked in the TOP 57 percent of universities in the world included in the list.

Once again, we are at the forefront of Polish universities in the Times Higher Education Impact Ranking 2022. This is the only global ranking based on the Sustainable Development Goals created by the United Nations.

In the latest edition of the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, we took first place among Polish universities.

We achieved the highest scores in 6 U-Multirank indicators.

In the World University Rankings by Subject 2023, we were classified in four categories: Business and Economy, Computer Science, Engineering, Physical Sciences, and we achieved the best result in Poland in two of them!

In Shanghai's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), we have been classified in two scientific disciplines: Civil Engineering and Electrical & Electronic Engineering. What's more, Gdańsk Tech was classified as the only Polish university participating in the ranking in the discipline of civil engineering.

Our university has joined the consortium of ten ENHANCE European technical universities. The aim of the European University ENHANCE project is systemic, structural and sustainable cooperation among the universities of the consortium in order to develop new solutions that go beyond the existing models of cooperation.

Gdańsk University of Technology also confirmed its strong position in the country - with three A+ categories it was among the top Polish universities in terms of the number of the highest possible categories awarded as part of the evaluation of scientific activity for the years 2017-2021. In addition, eight scientific disciplines conducted at Gdańsk Tech received category A. Category A+ in three disciplines is the best result among technical universities. Among all evaluated scientific units, only the University of Warsaw and the Jagiellonian University received more A+ categories than Gdańsk University of Technology.

In addition, we took third place among the best technical universities and maintained the sixth position in the classification of all universities in the country in the ranking of universities of the "Perspektywy" Foundation. On the other hand, in the Ranking of Fields of Study, environmental engineering at the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering was recognized as the best one in Poland.

Award-winning Inventions, Influential Researchers

Two inventions developed at Gdańsk Tech under the supervision of prof. Andrzej Czyżewski from the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics won prestigious awards in 2022: CyberRadar was awarded during the 3rd "Health of Poles" Congress in the "Perspektywy Medycyny" competition, and INZNAK, i.e. the technology of intelligent road signs for adaptive traffic control, was awarded the emblem “Teraz Polska” in the “Innovation” category.

In turn, a probe for measuring the corrosion rate, an invention of a team of scientists led by prof. Kazimierz Darowicki, developed in cooperation with PKN Orlen, was awarded at the 15th International Fair of Inventions and Innovations INTARG®2022. It received a platinum medal for the most valuable invention in the industrial sector. In addition, the invention received the highest Grand Prix award among all submitted inventions. The probe also won a silver medal at the iENA international fair in Nuremberg.

53 scientists from Gdańsk Tech were among the Top 2% of the most influential researchers in the world.

An important event in the context of science was the reporting conference of the universities distinguished in the "Excellence Initiative - Research Universities" program organized by the Ministry of Education and Science in cooperation with Gdańsk Tech. The conference, which took place in September at Gdańsk Tech, enabled the presentation of the university's activities so far in the third year of the IDUB program implementation and the exchange of experiences and good practices.

Multi-million Investments

Gdańsk University of Technology is currently one of the largest and most dynamically operating investors in Pomerania, as well as among all universities in the country, and infrastructure projects implemented by Gdańsk Tech are worth hundreds of millions of zlotys. The flagship investment, i.e. the construction of the STOS Competence Center, was among the most anticipated investments in 2022 in Poland. STOS CC will be one of the most modern IT centers in this part of Europe.

Revitalized in 2021, the Hydromechanics building of Gdańsk University of Technology [No. 11 on the campus map] was awarded in the 4th edition of the competition of the Mayor of the City of Gdańsk for the best architectural implementation in Gdańsk.

Tightening Cooperation Within the Fahrenheit Universities

Gdańsk University of Technology together with the Medical University of Gdańsk and the University of Gdańsk, forming the Daniel Fahrenheit Union of Universities in Gdańsk, signed an agreement on the creation of the "Fahrenheit Universities" community and cooperation in creating the federation. Fahrenheit Universities together with the City of Gdańsk, partners and other universities organized for the first time a joint celebration of the commencement of the academic year under the slogan Long Live Science! Together with the City of Gdańsk and Hewelianum, the Fahrenheit Science Picnic was also organized, which attracted large numbers not only of university employees and their families, but also of the inhabitants of Gdańsk. Gdańsk University of Technology together with FARu universities also appeared at the stand of the Polish pavilion at Expo Dubai 2020 during the Polish Science Week.

In Solidarity With Ukraine

The academic community of Gdańsk University of Technology demonstrated solidarity with Ukraine by implementing a number of aid activities. Special solutions were also developed that streamlined the process of recruiting students from Ukraine.

New Vice-Rectors and Vice-Chancellors

Changes have been introduced in the university authorities. The group of vice-rectors increased to five people. The new vice-rectors are: Barbara Wikieł, PhD, professor at Gdańsk Tech, vice-rector for student affairs and Mariusz Kaczmarek, PhD, DSc, professor at Gdańsk Tech, vice-rector for education. The composition of the university's vice-chancellors was also expanded. Anna Gerlach took the position of Vice-Chancellor for Infrastructure, and Andrzej Sobecki, PhD, Eng. became the Vice-Chancellor for IT.

Sports Successes, Great Juwenalia Celebration

Gdańsk University of Technology won the title of the Polish Academic Champion for the third time in a row, both in the general classification and among technical universities.

Nearly 20,000 people had fun during Juwenalia Gdańskie 2022, a student holiday which was co-organized by the Student Self-Government of Gdańsk University of Technology.

Open to Talented Youth

Gdańsk University of Technology as a partner of the organizer of the Pomeranian Ranking of Secondary Schools and Technical Schools 2022 of the "Perspektywy" Foundation had the honor to be the first to announce which secondary schools in the province took the highest places in the ranking.

The ranking gala was one of the elements of the Open Days of Gdańsk University of Technology. Hundreds of high school graduates appeared on the campus premises, and we recorded nearly 32,000 users on the Wirtualna PG website, and over 2.5 thousand people registering for online events
