Alumni Day at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology

Graduation Day at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology
On June 22, Gdansk University of Technology was filled with extraordinary events celebrating the university's 120th anniversary. Above all, it was a day that brought together hundreds of graduates for sentimental visits.

Alumni Day began with visits by former students to their respective faculties. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Shipbuilding (also known as WIMiO) was visited mainly by graduates of predecessor faculties, such as the Faculty of Shipbuilding, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical-Technological Engineering, and Ocean Engineering and Shipbuilding, of which our faculty is the "heir."

The participants of this unique event gathered in the lecture theatre of building no. 40 in WIMiO, where they were welcomed by the Vice-Dean for Development, Jacek Kropiwnicki, Ph.D. In his speech, the Vice-Dean emphasized the importance of maintaining ties with alumni and their influence on the development and prestige of the faculty. He also discussed the current structure of the unit, the teaching offer, and the current activities of the faculty community. Other speakers at the meeting included: former Rector of Gdansk University of Technology, and former Dean and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering - Prof. Edmund Wittbrodt, Director of the Shipbuilding Institute - Wojciech Litwin, Ph.D., PG, former Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering - Associate Professor Wojciech Kiełczyński, and a graduate of the Faculty of Shipbuilding - Ryszard Dubiela, M.Sc. All the speakers, also graduates of Gdansk University of Technology, repeatedly emphasized the great importance and sentiment towards their Alma Mater, particularly the Faculty now formed by the academic community of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Shipbuilding.

After the meeting, the graduates had the opportunity to visit the faculty's premises, nostalgically revisiting their former student years, as well as exploring new areas that are part of the unit today. At noon, graduates from all faculties of Gdansk University of Technology who graduated 50 years ago met with Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, Rector of PG, in the Main Building of the university. During a ceremonial meeting, they received commemorative medals as "a token of appreciation for many years of professional and social activity for the glory of our Alma Mater." Later, the participants gathered in front of the Main Building, where, despite the rain, a joint photo was taken.

The highlight of the day was the Jubilee Open-Air Concert, featuring nearly 300 artists from the choirs of Gdansk, Poznan, and Warsaw Universities of Technology, as well as children's choirs from the F. Nowowiejski General Music School of the First and Second Degree and the Baltic Opera, and musicians from the Baltic Opera Orchestra, augmented by an expanded percussion section and two pianos. Under the baton of Professor Mariusz Mroz, they spectacularly performed Carmina Burana, a piece composed in 1937 by German composer Carl Orff.
