The New Programme Format for Naval Architecture & Offshore Structures

Naval Architecture & Offshore Structures
"Study and Work, or Study, Research, and Take Part in Exchange Programmes". A completely new approach to postgraduate study, unparalleled across the country. In January 2025, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology will launch admissions for the Naval Architecture and Offshore Structures course – delivered entirely in English.

“Our offering stands out for its combination of a flexible schedule, collaboration with industry, and the opportunity to study and undertake projects in English – opening doors to an international career,” emphasises Professor Wojciech Litwin, Director of the Institute of Naval Architecture.

The programme was developed in response to market demands, but above all, to meet the needs of students.

“Numerous conversations with students allowed us to identify two main reasons why they often decide against pursuing a master’s degree. Many graduates are already employed in the industry, achieving financial stability, and consider part-time studies instead,” adds Professor Wojciech Litwin. “Additionally, there is a perception that a master’s degree does not add significant value. The new ‘study and work’ formula debunks this myth by combining English-taught studies with the opportunity to gain professional experience or do research with a view to pursuing doctoral studies.”

A Modern Approach to Building Career Pathways

The new study structure is highly flexible – students can work in industry, engage in scientific research, or participate in exchange programmes at other universities through ERASMUS+.

Two pathways are available:

  • Study and Work Professionally
  • Study, Do Research, and Participate in Exchange Programmes

The “study and work” or “study and do research” models allow students to tailor their career development paths to their individual needs. Collaboration with industry ensures that projects are often inspired by employers’ challenges and requirements.

“Students who combine their studies with professional work can rely on a flexible timetable and support from academic staff. The programme has been designed to enable students to gain work experience while continuing their education. Additionally, evening remote classes are offered to enable effective time management,” explains Professor Wojciech Litwin.

The programme is designed for graduates of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology, as well as related disciplines. This three-semester course offers three specialisations, the availability of which depends on the number of applicants:

  • Hull Design – focusing on hydromechanics and hull structure.
  • Marine Machinery – specialising in ship propulsion and equipment.
  • Offshore Wind Power Plants – covering the design and operation of offshore wind farms.

In Demand Both at Home and Abroad

Graduates of naval architecture programmes are highly sought after in the job market – both in Poland and internationally. With their English proficiency and practical skills, they are well-equipped to work in design, manufacturing, or repair companies within the maritime industry and related sectors.
