Associate Professor Wojciech Litwin, Director of the Institute of Ship Design at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology, has been awarded the title of Professor in Engineering and Technical Sciences by the President of Poland. Congratulations!

"You reach the summit, see the next mountains, and start making plans," said a well-known mountaineer—a sentiment that resonates with me. I believe my work will largely remain the same, with a continued focus on scientific research, infrastructure development, supporting doctoral candidates, establishing new collaborations, and fostering international cooperation with both academics and industry professionals. My goal is for my research to be of practical value. Equally important to me are the affairs of the Institute of Ship Design. By the end of my second (and final) term as Director, I aspire to organise a major international conference on shipbuilding. Perhaps that is the next peak to conquer? Time will tell," emphasises Professor Wojciech Litwin.

Professor Wojciech Litwin graduated in 1996 from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Gdańsk University of Technology, specialising in machinery and equipment for the food industry. Since 2000, his primary research focus has been on ship shaft bearings, which was also the subject of his doctoral dissertation, defended in 2004. Between 2004 and 2014, he completed three research projects that formed the foundation for his habilitation in 2014.

From 2012 to 2020, he served as Vice-Dean for Research at the Faculty of Ocean Engineering and Ship Technology. Since 2021, he has held the position of Director of the Institute of Ship Design.

Following his habilitation, Professor Wojciech Litwin continued his scientific research and led industry-funded projects. Between 2016 and 2019, he worked on a research project awarded by the National Science Centre, titled "Investigation of Water-Lubricated Sliding Bearings Under Selected Adverse Operating Conditions." He also led a research and development team on the project "Development of a Prototype Offshore Catamaran with Hybrid Propulsion and Energy Recovery During Sailing."

He is the author and co-author of numerous scientific publications.

Current Projects

Professor Wojciech Litwin focuses his research on bearing systems, power transmission, and hybrid propulsion systems. "I consider my most significant achievement to be the development of a methodology for studying sliding bearings and the establishment of a laboratory infrastructure based on research stands of my own design," he emphasises.

He is currently working on the following projects:

  • "Investigation of Friction Phenomena in Water-Lubricated Sliding Contacts Containing Mineral-Based Solid Particles" (2024–2027)
  • "A Pan-European Network of Ocean Tribology"

We wish Professor Wojciech Litwin continued success in his research endeavours!
