Career after FMEST: Paweł Jacheć [Graduate Profile]

What opportunities, in your opinion, does studying at FMEST provide?
Studying at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology at Gdańsk University of Technology offers valuable professional development opportunities. The Gdańsk region, home to numerous shipbuilding and maritime-related companies, provides graduates with excellent employment prospects. The programme allows students to connect with future engineers and managers in the maritime sector, fostering a strong professional network. The knowledge and skills acquired during the course are highly regarded not only by Polish companies but also by international firms operating in the maritime industry.
What did you learn during your studies?
Above all, I learned how to seek knowledge independently—lecturers provide direction, but it was up to me to delve into the topics further. I also understood the importance of diligence and precision, which are crucial for an engineer. Most importantly, I discovered the invaluable worth of friendships formed during my studies.
What advice would you give to first-year students?
Get involved in projects and student research groups—lecture theory truly makes sense only when applied in practice. Don’t be afraid to ask senior students for help—their experience is invaluable, especially when facing your first exams. The key is to find a balance between studying and student life—this isn’t high school, no one will guide you by the hand, so you must learn to manage your time. Build relationships with your peers—these friendships often last a lifetime and can open many professional doors in the future.
Your greatest achievement during your studies
Passing Strength of Materials with Dr. Trębacki :).
Your most significant professional achievement
I can name two:
- A strong network of colleagues and friends whom I can always rely on—throughout my career, I have never "burned bridges," which is crucial in such a tight-knit industry where everyone knows everyone. Remember, your reputation follows you throughout your career.
- Establishing a production facility from scratch, which generated over PLN 10 million in revenue within three years.
The most interesting project you have worked on
The design and construction of a 12-metre rapid response boat capable of reaching speeds of over 65 knots.
