WEGEMT VISIONS – PhD Dissertation Competition in Marine Technology

WEGEMT
WEGEMT (The European Association of Universities in Marine Technology and Related Sciences) is launching the “WEGEMT VISIONS Best PhD Thesis Award” to recognize outstanding doctoral dissertations that make a significant contribution to the advancement of marine technology and related fields.

The competition is open to authors of doctoral theses defended between 2020 and 2024 at universities that are members of the WEGEMT network. Submissions are welcome in the broad areas of:

  • Naval Architecture

  • Marine Engineering

  • Ocean Engineering

  • Offshore Engineering

  • Maritime Transport and Logistics

  • Inland Waterway Transport

  • Marine Environmental Protection

  • Maritime Safety

Recruitment Now Open for Offshore Master's Program at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology

Smart Renewable Energy Engineering
Recruitment for master's programs at Gdańsk University of Technology began on June 24. As part of the DigiWind project, the university has launched a new program: Smart Renewable Energy Engineering, offered by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology. The program addresses the growing demand for offshore energy specialists in Poland and across Europe. This innovative educational path—developed under the industry patronage of PGE Baltica—aims to prepare graduates for careers in the offshore wind energy sector. Future graduates will be qualified for roles such as turbine operations engineer, renewable energy consultant, or cybersecurity specialist, with potential monthly salaries reaching several thousand PLN gross.

Cree Yacht and the FMEST Join Forces: Another Cooperation Agreement Signed

Cree Yacht is the latest company to partner with the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology as part of the master’s program in Naval Architecture and Offshore Structures.

The cooperation agreement was signed on June 18, 2025.
The document was signed by Professor Mariusz Deja, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology, and Marta Puchowska, co-owner of Cree Yacht. Professor Wojciech Litwin, Director of the Institute of Naval Architecture, also attended the signing.

Dr. Marek Szkodo has been awarded the title of Professor in Engineering and Technology Sciences

By decision of the President of the Republic of Poland, Dr. Marek Szkodo, a faculty member of the Institute of Machine and Materials Technology at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology, has been awarded the title of Professor in Engineering and Technology Sciences. Congratulations!

Professor Marek Szkodo obtained his PhD in the field of mechanical engineering in 1991 at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Technology of Gdańsk University of Technology. He was awarded the degree of habilitated doctor in the discipline of materials engineering by the Częstochowa University of Technology on 6 December 2005.

AIS Antenna on the Roof of the Institute of Naval Architecture – A Student Project in the Gulf of Gdańsk

Students from the Strength and Risk Student Club (WiR) have installed an AIS (Automatic Identification System) antenna on the roof of the Institute of Naval Architecture, with support from specialists at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology. The antenna will serve the purpose of automatically identifying vessels and has a range covering the entire Gulf of Gdańsk (25 nautical miles).

"The AIS (Automatic Identification System) is used for the automatic identification of vessels and is mandatory on all ships that transmit signals via short-range (VHF) radio waves," emphasised Mateusz Gutkowski, President of the WiR student club.

The AIS receiver provides key data, including:

  • MMSI number (a unique vessel identifier),

  • vessel name,

  • position (latitude and longitude),

  • course over ground (COG),
