Eco-Friendly Unboxing: Sustainable Packaging in Action!

Is it possible to transform the textile, clothing, footwear, and leather industries by introducing sustainable packaging? An international team is working on this as part of the UNBOXING project under the Erasmus+ programme.

The goal of the UNBOXING project – Innovating Sustainable Packaging Solutions for the Textile, Clothing, Footwear, and Leather (TCFL) industries – is to equip participants with skills related to sustainable packaging in the industry, provide trainers with tools for TCFL training, support TCFL stakeholders in adopting sustainable packaging practices, and motivate individuals from disadvantaged groups to take action towards environmentally friendly work.

Collaboration between Science and Industry: Conference – Constellation of Scientific Schools in Mechanical Engineering

"Constellation of Scientific Schools in Mechanical Engineering" Conference aims to further develop collaboration between the four Schools and create a forum for exchanging knowledge and experiences between scientists, entrepreneurs, and doctoral students in the field of mechanical engineering. The School of Abrasive Machining and the School of Cutting Machining have long supported the development of the scientific community, serving as a platform for cooperation between science and industry.

On July 26, 2024, the Minister of Science, Dariusz Wieczorek, appointed an advisory team for the 'Polish Research Infrastructure Map.' Among the 24 scientists, there are two representatives from the Gdańsk University of Technology: Prof. Michał Wasilczuk and Prof. Jacek Stefański.

The Polish Research Infrastructure Map was established in 2009 at the initiative of the Minister of Science and Higher Education. This initiative brings together infrastructure with the highest potential for scientific excellence, combining research resources in areas key to the development of science and the country. Additionally, it monitors Polish scientific institutions in terms of their investment policies and scientific and infrastructural resources.

Students discover the secrets of the stratosphere
Members of the SimLE student club from the Gdańsk University of Technology are working on an exciting research project called STORMDUST. The project's goal is to understand how microorganisms inhabiting the stratosphere have adapted to climate change and to study the chemical compounds present at specific altitudes in the stratosphere. This project is being carried out as part of the international REXUS/BEXUS programme, which is based on an agreement between the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the Swedish National Space Agency (SNSA), in close cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA).

A solar boat that flies made by student club
More than six years ago, an extraordinary idea was born in the minds of several students from the Gdansk University of Technology: to create a flying solar boat. This bold vision, which at first may have seemed unrealistic, gradually began to materialise, despite numerous conceptual, technological and quality challenges. Today, thanks to the tenacious work and determination of the KSTO Korab team from GT's Department of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology, we can admire the results of their efforts in the form of the ‘Solar’ hydrofoil.

Hydrofoil technology and operation

Solar is a hydrofoil fully powered by solar energy, derived from seven solar panels on board. Hovering above the water is made possible by the carrier lobe technology, known as hydrofoils (hydro wings). These wings generate a lifting force that lifts the hydrofoil above the surface of the water, significantly reducing drag, allowing it to reach higher speeds with less energy consumption.

FMEST Students among RADIUM research projects winners

Eleven submitted scientific projects involving particularly talented students in research activities have been awarded funding under the Radium Learning Through Research Programs. The total value of the awarded funds exceeds PLN 261,000. Among the awarded projects, two will be implemented at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology.

Biofunctional hydrogel for use in bone cements

One of these is ‘Development of a biofunctional, synergistically cross-linked hydrogel and characterisation of its application in dual-bonding bone cements’. The project, led by Dr Marcin Wekwejt, Eng (Department of Biomaterials Technology), will receive funding of PLN 23,760.00. Within the framework of this mentoring grant, Eng. Maryia Khamenka will pursue Individual Research Studies (2nd degree) in the field of Mechanical and Medical Engineering.

FMEST PhD student - Balbina Makurat-Kasprolewicz, has been awarded the prestigious Czesław M. Rodkiewicz Scholarship Foundation.

The Czesław M. Rodkiewicz Scholarship Foundation supports young Poles in their pursuit of education and development of their talents. The Foundation, established by Czesław M. Rodkiewicz, aims to financially support students with outstanding academic achievements and activity in socio-cultural life. The scholarship is awarded annually on the basis of academic performance, involvement in community activities and the potential for future benefit to society.
