New Programmes
The new programmes at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology have recently been a topic in the media. Recruitment for postgraduate studies at Gdańsk University of Technology will commence soon.

Perkoz, Rybitwa, and now... Zimorodek! SimLE is working on a new watercraft.

Even more advanced, created using 3D printing technology, equipped with new sensors and onboard computers. Students from the SimLE Student Club are developing a new autonomous watercraft named ASV Zimorodek.

Students from SimLE are designing a vehicle for the RoboBoat competition, an international student event held annually in Sarasota, Florida. Teams from around the world design autonomous robotic boats to navigate a challenging course.

A Quality Leap

So far, the students have constructed two such vehicles: ASV Perkoz and ASV Rybitwa. One significant innovation for the new craft is that Zimorodek will not be built using laminate. Instead, the students will manufacture the hull using 3D printing technology.

Scientific Seminar at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology

Modern Research, Nature in Engineering, and Erasmus+ Exchange - these topics were discussed on 20 December during the scientific seminar titled “Nature Inspiration in Engineering” at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology (FMEST). The special guests of the event were representatives from Hochschule Bremen – City University of Applied Sciences.

The aim of the Polonium programme is to enhance the effectiveness of the university in attracting the most talented candidates to the Doctoral School at Gdańsk University of Technology.

Miniature 8: How Will Laser Technologies Affect the Durability of Implants?

Dr Magdalena Jażdżewska has been awarded a grant in the MINIATURA competition, organised by the National Science Centre. She will carry out a project titled "Laser Remelting of a Nanohydroxyapatite Coating Deposited on Titanium Alloy in the Context of the Tribological Properties of the Resulting Surface Layer."

Dr Magdalena Jażdżewska aims to investigate how advanced laser technologies can enhance the durability and functional properties of coatings used on medical implants.

"The planned activity involves producing composite surface layers on titanium alloy substrates by depositing nanohydroxyapatite coatings, which will then be remelted using laser technology," explains Dr Magdalena Jażdżewska. Hydroxyapatite, a hard crystalline component of human bone, is widely used as a coating material to modify the surface of implants.

Prof. Mariusz Deja, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology, has been elected Vice-Chair of the College of Deans of Mechanical Faculties at Polish Technical Universities for the 2024–2028 term.

Students Visit Sunreef Yachts: "Exploring Potential Career Opportunities"

Students in their third semester of Yacht Design and Construction recently visited the Sunreef Yachts shipyard in Gdańsk. This initiative is part of a collaboration between the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology and the company. Thanks to this partnership, students benefit from opportunities such as paid internships and traineeships, providing valuable hands-on experience in the industry.

"Visits like this are incredibly important; they give future engineers the opportunity to explore potential workplaces and understand the scope of their future responsibilities," explains Jacek Frost, the Internship Coordinator. "I have had the pleasure of collaborating with Sunreef Yachts for several years, and the company is always willing to welcome students for paid placements and internships," he adds.
