Ocean Engineering

About this field of study

We offer a wide range of education in the area of consideration, which includes both the construction of ships and floating objects, as well as the exploitation of oceans and seas. The offer have been prepared  in according to modern requirements of the market, including topics  related to the construction of small ships, yachts, coastal shipping vessels, inland, vessels for oil rig support, etc.,  as well as issues of technology, ship repair. We learn to build ships within range of the smallest yachts and fishing boats to the largest tankers and  large passenger vessels.

Outline of the study program.

The program lasts  3 or 4 semesters (from Academic Year 2019/2020).

In the case of studies in English we offer one specialty: Ocean Engineering, with two separate diploma profiles: Ship Technology and Offshore Engineering and Marine Engineering and Offshore Energy.

Graduates obtain advanced  general technical knowledge and skills necessary for creative use in the design, construction, repair and operation of ships, ocean engineering objects and systems present in the maritime sector. Graduate is prepared to execute designing and construction works in the area of ​​Ocean Engineering; conducting scientific researches in the area of ​​Ocean Engineering; production management, operation and  repairs of ships and ocean engineering objects and teamwork in an international environment. A graduate is also prepared to work in factories of widely recognized shipbuilding sector; designing and engineering offices of shipbuilding and maritime branch; R & D centres of shipbuilding and maritime economy; enterprise advisory and consulting services in the area of ​​Ocean Engineering; shipbuilding classification institutions; Maritime Administration and the international institutions of the naval sector. Graduates should have instilled habits of lifelong learning and professional development and be prepared to take up research challenges and to study the third degree.

We offer students two different diploma profiles of education:

Specific admission requirements

It is possible to start 2nd level studies upon following conditions: graduate (with engineer degree) from Ocean Engineering or Mechanics and have definite average note from 1st studying level. A place on a rank list of applicants decides about admission within estimate earlier students number

Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning (formal, non-formal and informal)

First degree university graduation diploma for course completion in accordance with Regulations concerning day and extramural studies of the I and II degree at the Gdansk University of Technology in the 2010/2011 academic year.

Qualification requirements and regulations

The awarding of Bachelor of Science diploma requires the acquisition of no less than 90 ECTS points during 3 semesters.

An academic year of day studies is equivalent to 60 ECTS points.

Profile of the programme

A result of studies is to obtain advanced wide technical knowledge and skills necessary to creative designing, building, repairs and exploitation of ships and ocean engineering objects

Key learning outcomes

On completion of studies a graduate will:

  • to do designing and construction works in scope of ocean engineering,
  • to do development works in scope of maritime technology,
  • to manage of production, exploitation and repairs of ships and others,
  • to use computers and other new technology,
  • to know foreign language on level B2 of European System
  • to work in multi-international teams,
  • to be ready to studying on higher level.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples

Graduates are qualified to work as:

  • empolyees in maritime environment enterprises as in building shipyards, repair shipyards and other company’s cooperated with shipbuilding industry,
  • empolyees in shipbuilding designing-construction offices,
  • empolyees in research instituties,
  • empolyees in classification societies.

Access to further studies

Students can continue their studies doing a PhD  course (III degree studies) at the Gdansk University of Technology or another university.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

Graduation requirements

The final examination consists of two parts: the presentation of diploma thesis and a discussion on its subject as well as answering at least three questions regarding the entire course of studies.

The final result is expressed in words, according to the  Gdansk University of Technology Study Regulations, and is the sum of three components: 60% for the weighted average of all the grades achieved during the study, 30 % for the  diploma thesis grade, 10 % for the final exam grade.
